Weekly Round Up: Kanye, Tacos & Hair

Do we all remember the time before Kanye West was a complete douche bag? It seems to be oh so long ago. His initial erratic/retarded behavior was charming, I laughed at the “George Bush doesn’t care about black people comment” because it was so completely ridiculous. I gave him creative freedom when he auto tuned like, an entire album. But then he went into a downward douche spiral that I could just not rescue him from. I listened to “Watch the Throne” and I loved it for Jay-Z’s creative force but for the most I stopped playing Mr. West’s music and forgot he existed. Then last night, I stumbled upon him again, not sure why. Sometimes a little space apart heals old wounds. Our break-up gave me the time I needed to regroup and appreciate him all over again. I listened to some of his old stuff and it made me want to run. I just wanted to get up and run. So I did, 4 miles inspired by Kanye at 8 P.M. The night before I was to leave for New Orleans. Here’s my play list people, check it out, he may just inspire you too.

1. Scream & Shout by will.i.am & Britney Spears
2. Heard ‘Em Say by Kanye West
3. Cinema (Skrillex Remix)
4. Monster by Kanye West
5. Baptism by Crystal Castles
6. Touch the Sky by Kanye West
7. Power by Kanye West
8. Paranoid by Kanye West

Now, on to hair. I met my hair soul mate yesterday at J. Henry salon in Portland. I felt like a single girl who had been desperately seeking for two years and then out of no where, BAM, there was my man. I have tried about a dozen salons in and around Portland, nothing was good enough, no-one understood and I spent many days crying as I left, wondering, what the hell just happened to my hair? I knew right away that this was going to be a different sort of experience. And immediately upon entering their space, my nerves calmed. J. Henry is literally one of the most beautiful spaces I have seen. It has an open floor plan, where the minimal approach is utilized with splashes of classically aged chic. I could see influences from Restoration Hardware and waves of industrial. It is a perfectly designed space. Then there was Adam, my stylist who aligned with my hair center straight away. He was like: “Girl, we are gonna put your hair on a ten year plan so in a decade, you’ll be walking on that shit. And it will look fabulous” And I was all like: “Whhhhhhatttt, YES! Yo, that’s what I’ve been missing, p.s. I love you” He did everything I asked, keeping my length in the most perfect fashion with a flare of bang that was just enough. He made my hair glossy, healthy, beautiful. And while working his magic he entertained me thoroughly with his “a little too much but just enough” personality which I loved, because I am the same exact way. If you are a woman and you are seeking an experience that will make you feel gorgeous, you need to visit this salon. It’s a gem, a rare gem, in a city that doesn’t always allow this sort of thing to happen. Visit Adam if you can, although I am sure anyone in this place is wonderful, I would expect nothing less from a place that obviously has very high standards. Every interaction I had with every person who worked there was professional, warm and utterly delightful. Adam and I are going to coast through this hair life together, one 6 week appointment at a time.

Lastly, tacos. There needs to be some discussion about food on here, right? Of course. Well, I finally made it to El Rayo and yup, it was every bit as good as I have heard. With a collection of authentic dishes and stiff drinks that will get you sloppy drunk, it’s a place everyone has to visit. Oh and lets not forget the awesome blue plastic marlin they place in every drink. I took mine home. They were too cute not too. Josh and I opted for the chips and salsa to start. I then had a burrito which was hearty and delicious. Josh had some sort of tacos, I can’t remember. They were on the smaller side but between the rice/beans and chips, even a man of Josh’s stature was feeling full. The wait staff was prompt and friendly, laughing at our sometimes dining awkwardness (we were sitting on high stools, ya know???) and coming over whenever it seemed we needed something. For dessert, Josh had the chocolate mousse with Mexican inspired flavorings and I had some sort of strangely weird but delicious coconut cupcake. The check, one hundred percent manageable. It was a great price for everything we stuffed in our face. So, if you feel like getting a little drunky drunk and shoving the hot and spicy in your mouth, this is the place for you. Just please, try and keep your pants on.

I’m in New Orleans till Tuesday people so you all enjoy your weekend. Try to keep it light and tight.

weekly round-up for all your holiday needs

Phew, Christmas is in like a bunch of days which can be overwhelming. This time of year is when we booze it up, forget to work out (whooooops) and eat excessive amounts of shit. It’s cold outside, very cold, so you think, this extra cookie, I NEED it. Fat=warmth. Right? RIGHT???? So I have some tips and tricks on how to keep yourself motivated to stay beautiful. Let us remember that once January hits, bathing suit season is just around the corner. Ok, more like six months but that comes on quick.

The Glowing Green Smoothie

As described by the creator this will improve your life, your hair, your weight, your skin. Everything. Drink it once a day and you will feel the love.

1 1/2 cups water

-1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon
1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)

1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

Directions: 1. Add water and chopped head of romaine to blender. 2. Blend at a low speed until smooth. 3. Add celery, apple and pear and blend at high speed. 4. Add cilantro and parsley. 5. Finish with banana and lemon juice. 6. Drink it up.

After you are done drinking your super juice, you can go upstairs (or where ever) and wash your face with this beautiful cleansing nectar from FIG+YARROW. This stuff is botanical based, nutrient packed, sheer goodness and will prepare your skin for the many sweaty nights you are facing while drinking too much champagne and dancing up a storm. A great gift to give as well to anyone you think may need a little kick in their beauty routine.

Now for the working out. I have discovered a fantastic shoe that will get your body moving. For sure. They are made in Sweden and recommended by some of the world’s best athletes. When they arrived at my home I was initially unsure, they look different and they feel different. My first run was kind of sloppy and I didn’t feel great about it. Now, that being said it was an almost 9 mile run, not the smartest to do with new shoes but I was excited. Really excited. The more I wear these, the more I run in these, the more my feet move around in these, the more comfortable they become. They are called On-Cloud Shoes and the name fits because that is what it feels like once you figure out how to use them. They are based on a technology which is meant to support all parts of your feet, making your run feel more natural, more like a barefoot sensation with the support to back you up when you need it. They range from $99 to $139 depending on which type you need. (They break it up by time per mile) Shipping is free, even from so far away. And they get them to you quick. They are beautiful and make me want to get up and go.

Some of my other favorites for holiday gift giving and such:

www.markandgraham.com Great interesting gifts that are easy to personalize.

www.brooklynindustries.com Funky T-shirts, bags and sweatshirts.

www.oldfaithfulshop.com Awesome items from coffee makers to lavender laundry soap. SO GOOD.

I hope everyone has a fun and festive holiday! Don’t forget to take the time to take care of yourself while doing great things for others and of course, getting drunk as a skunk.

Wash your damn face

Here is a confession:

When I was in middle school, I was commonly referred to as “pizza face.”

It was terrible. I always laughed and said that from my father, I inherited all the things a woman would never want: big ears, a large nose, pores that I can stick spare change in which amount to terrible skin problems & an opinionated sense that most can do without. As I get older, I have learned to embrace most of these characteristics, as I do belive that provide me with a sense of myself, but the one thing I could never really be comfortable with, was my skin. I don’t want to sound like an acne commercial, those are terribly cliché, but I really have always struggled with products. As I embrace organic and all natural with my cooking, I want to do the same with my body. Unfortunately, sometimes, only the chemicals do it right. For a long while I was using the complete Neutrogena product line for acne, which ranges from $29.99 to $39.99 depending on where you buy it. But, after having my second child, my skin wasn’t having it anymore. Then, I switched to the Oil of Olay acne line which can range from $39.99 to $49.99 depending on where you buy it. The bottle of face wash in that box is super small, so you have to buy it twice as much. So I gave that up to after deciding my skin was not worth that kind of money. Frustrated one day, I went into the Aveda store at the mall one day and said fuck it, I’m going to try something natural and a smidge more expensive for the sake of being done with this shit. My skin was dry at the time, I had breakouts going on and I was just like, ok, let’s do this. I went right for the acne line and bought everything they had. It costs me almost a hundred dollars. This was more than a month and a half ago.

This product line was literally, the best thing that has ever happened in my whole entire life.

I am proud to say that not only is my skin clear, but it feels great. I actually enjoy putting on make-up but I don’t feel weird without it. Yes, there is an occasional flaw, but it’s smaller in nature and goes away quickly. To boot, this stuff lasts, the foaming cleanser you need a pump or two of and it’s like the bottle is endless. Initially, the investment may seem large, but you won’t have to pay out for a long while, so buy this shit and end your troubles. At the end of the day, as women, there are few things that really make us happy. We are, by nature, difficult folks. Our men, usually frustrate us, our hips, kill us and our tempers, fuel us. So, give yourself piece of mind, wash your damn face and feel good about yourself. Even if it’s just for that one moment you look at yourself in the mirror. Embrace it.

I have.

Shoooooot, if I am constantly going to criticize my ass, at least I can love my face.
